As you all most likely know, Donald Trump has withdrawn the US from the Paris climate change agreement. The Paris Climate Change agreement was reached in November of 2016, which was the first time a lot of the world together to combat a common cause. The agreement’s central aim is to strengthen the global response to climate change, and additionally, to strengthen the ability of countries to deal with the serious impacts of climate change. Of 197 parties, 170 have ratified the convention.
One US governor is still fighting strong in the fight against climate change. Jerry Brown, a Democrat who was elected as governor of California in 2011, recently took an 11-day trip through Europe visiting 4 countries. Brown is fighting to keep the US engaged in the Paris agreement despite the US’s withdrawal and has also developed a separate coalition of 187 cities, states, and other jurisdictions. The Under 2 Coalition is committed to cutting carbon dioxide emissions and limiting global warming. California is taking action and other states are starting to fight too. Not just one side of the political spectrum can fight this issue - everyone needs to get involved! Everyone needs to work together to prevent further damage to our earth!
Jerry Brown is not the only advocate, former Republican California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has also been traveling Europe. Arnold Schwarzenegger is not afraid to speak up, while at an international climate summit hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron, Schwarzenegger stated: “It doesn’t matter that Donald Trump backed out of the Paris Agreement.” There is always something we can do to help. Although Mr. Schwarzenegger is not the governor of California any longer, he is still making efforts to control climate change.
Both past and present governors of California want to prevent further damage climate change may cause. We need to follow in California’s footsteps. We need to help save our planet before it is too late.
